As soon as I saw her at the airport, I couldn't wait for this moment to come. All of my best laid plans for crafting the perfect moment to propose flew out the window.

After a short drive through the Presidio, along the 49 Mile Scenic Drive, Sadie and I walked through Lands End, at the northwestern-most point of the San Francisco peninsula.

In the days to follow, the 49 Mile Scenic Drive seagull, which appears all over SF, reminded Sadie and I of this evening.

She had no idea of what I had planned, of the rock that was burning a hole in my pocket.

After emptying it.

I began to realize that I didn't have to craft the perfectly romantic moment.

The setting sun did most of the work.

Sadie never looked more beautiful to me. I was having a hard time concealing my plan... time to say those words.

At the gate to the Pacific, the light was slipping from the sky. The setting was accidentally ideal: hills, trees, the ocean, the bridge, on the edge of a cliff with the waves crashing below, and a chilly breeze pulling us close together.

After some quiet words, tears, hugs, and kisses, and finally the word "yes," Sadie and I were engaged.

The Blair Witch?

"I see bald people!"

Self-portait with flash.

Minutes later: "Mom, I'm engaged!"
